This course teaches the four operations of arithmetic: adding, taking away, multiplying and dividing. It begins with sums small enough for you to check on their fingers. Every answer in the first lesson is ten or below. From there the numbers grow, while the way of working stays the same.

The lessons build in order. The first two cover adding up to ten and taking away up to nine. Both use a number ladder: adding climbs it, taking away goes down it. The first lesson also teaches the five pairs that make ten. The third uses them to add past ten. It uses them to add past ten, so 9+59 + 5 becomes 10+410 + 4.

After that, two-digit numbers are split into their tens and their units. A sum then becomes one you already knows. Taking away rests on a single idea. Move both numbers the same way and the gap between them stays the same, so 13713 - 7 becomes 10410 - 4. The times tables from two to nine come next, built by adding the same number again and again. The tables from ten to twenty follow, by splitting each number first. The last three lessons take all of this to numbers of any size. They end with an introduction to division.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Say the numbers from 00 to 1010 in ascending and in descending order.
  • Recall the five pairs that make ten, and the doubles up to 9+99 + 9.
  • Add and take away single digits, including sums whose answers pass ten.
  • Add a single digit to a two-digit number, and take one away from it.
  • Add two two-digit numbers, including when the units make a new ten.
  • Work out any times fact from the two times table to the twenty times table.
  • Add and take away numbers of several digits, writing out each step.
  • Find the double of a number, and the half of a number.
  • Name the dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder, and check a division by multiplying back.
