You already know how to add. This les­son shows you that the times tables are noth­ing more than adding the same num­ber again and again. You will use them every day: to count legs on chairs, sweets in pack­ets, or rupees for three pen­cils at ₹5 each. Once the tables are built from adding, you can always work a fact out, even on a day when your mem­ory lets you down.

Take the tables one at a time. Read each one slowly, say it aloud, and check every answer by adding. Speed comes later, with prac­tice; being sure comes first.

Mul­ti­ply­ing is a short way of writ­ing a long addi­tion. If four chil­dren each have three sweets, you could add 3+3+3+33 + 3 + 3 + 3 and get 1212 — or you could say 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12, which means exactly the same thing.

The sign ×\times is read as "times" or "mul­ti­plied by". 3×43 \times 4 means three, four times over.

See­ing a times fact

Put four plates on the table. Put three sweets on each plate. How many sweets are there?

You can count them one by one. Or you can add the plates: 3+3+3+3=123 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Four lots of three is twelve. That is what 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12 says.

The num­ber line shows the count­ing on. Start at 00. Jump 33 for each plate. You land on 33, then 66, then 99, then 1212. Those land­ing places are the answers in the three times table.

How to read the tables below

Each table has three columns. The first is the times fact to learn. The sec­ond counts on from the answer before it — that is how you work the fact out when you can­not remem­ber it. The third shows the addi­tion the fact stands for.

Remem­ber. If a times fact escapes you, do not guess. Go to the one before it and add the num­ber on once more.

Two hands. Five fin­gers on each hand. How many fin­gers?

You have for­got­ten 6×76 \times 7. But you know 6×6=366 \times 6 = 36. Add one more six.

Exam­ple 3: a harder one

A box holds 77 pen­cils. How many pen­cils are in 88 boxes? That is 7×87 \times 8. If you know 7×7=497 \times 7 = 49, add one more seven.

You could also turn it round and use the eight times table: 8×7=568 \times 7 = 56. Both give the same answer, as the next sec­tion shows.

Exam­ple 4: money

One pen­cil costs ₹55. Four pen­cils cost 5+5+5+55 + 5 + 5 + 5 rupees, which is 5×4=205 \times 4 = 20. So four pen­cils cost ₹2020.

Two things worth notic­ing

The first is that turn­ing a mul­ti­pli­ca­tion round does not change it. 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12 and 4×3=124 \times 3 = 12. Four rows of three sweets and three rows of four sweets are the same pile counted two ways, so learn­ing one fact gives you two.

The same twelve dots can be seen as 4 rows of 3 or as 3 rows of 4. Turn­ing a mul­ti­pli­ca­tion round never changes the answer.

This halves the work. Once you know the two, three, four and five times tables, most of the six, seven, eight and nine tables are already known from the other side. For exam­ple, 8×38 \times 3 is the same as 3×8=243 \times 8 = 24.

The sec­ond is that the nine times table always adds up. Look at 9×4=369 \times 4 = 36: 3+6=93 + 6 = 9. Try it on 4545, 5454, 6363 — the dig­its of every answer add up to nine. It is a quick way to check your­self.

Here is how it works on 9×7=639 \times 7 = 63: 6+3=96 + 3 = 9. If you ever write 9×7=649 \times 7 = 64 by mis­take, the dig­its add to 1010, and you know at once to look again. The check works for 9×19 \times 1 up to 9×109 \times 10, since 9+0=99 + 0 = 9 too.

Com­mon mis­takes

  • Adding the two num­bers instead of mul­ti­ply­ing. 3×43 \times 4 is 1212, not 77.
  • Adding the num­ber one time too many or too few. 3×43 \times 4 has four threes in the sum, not three.
  • Count­ing on by the wrong num­ber. In the seven times table every step adds 77, how­ever big the answer gets.
  • Guess­ing a fact you have for­got­ten. Go back to the fact before it and add the num­ber once more.
  • Think­ing 4×34 \times 3 is a new fact to learn. It is the same as 3×43 \times 4.

Answers

Say­ing the tables aloud has no sin­gle writ­ten answer. A good model is: "two ones are two, two twos are four, two threes are six", and so on down to "two tens are twenty", then back up from "two tens are twenty" to "two ones are two". Do the same for each table up to nine.
