This course shows how to solve simple equations in which the numbers, and often the answers, are integers. It begins with equations such as x + 2 = 8 and x − 8 = −15, solved by moving a number to the other side and changing its sign. Then it adds equations where x is multiplied or divided, and gathers the four one-step rules together. Next come two-step equations, including ones with fractions such as 2x/3 + 5 = −7, and equations with the letter on both sides. The course ends with word problems on sums, differences and products of integers, with every answer checked.

Overview
Lessons
-
Equations with adding and taking away
What an equation is, and how to solve x + a = b and x − a = b by moving the number across and changing its sign, with answers that can be negative integers.
-
Equations with multiplying and dividing
Solving x × a = b and x ÷ a = b by doing the opposite operation, the four one-step rules together, and equations with big numbers and negative divisors.
-
Two-step equations
Solving equations such as 2x + 8 = −16 and 5x/6 + 7 = −18 by moving the number first and then undoing the multiplying and dividing, with a check every time.
-
Equations with the letter on both sides
Gathering the x terms on the left and the numbers on the right, joining like terms first, and handling −x, in equations such as 3x − 10 = 15 − 2x.
-
Word problems on equations
Turning sentences about sums, differences and products of integers into equations, solving them and checking the answers, with temperatures and money.
