This course teaches decimals from the beginning. It starts with a price tag and the marks on a ruler. Nothing is assumed about decimals themselves. The ideas are shown with things you already handles: rupees and paise, centimetres, grams and kilograms.
The lessons build in order. The first shows what the point means, and covers tenths, hundredths and thousandths. It also settles which zeros can be dropped. The second takes a number apart, digit by digit, and writes it as a sum of its parts. The third asks which fractions give a decimal that stops, and which give one that repeats for ever. The fourth turns grams into kilograms and paise into rupees. The last two lessons do the arithmetic: adding and taking away, then multiplying and dividing.
By the end, you will be able to:
- read a decimal such as aloud, one digit at a time;
- tidy a number by dropping the zeros that do no work, and keep the ones that do;
- give the place value of any digit, and write a number in expanded form;
- tell from the bottom of a fraction whether its decimal stops or repeats;
- turn a decimal back into a fraction, including a repeating one like ;
- write grams as kilograms, and paise as rupees;
- add and subtract by lining up the points and filling short numbers with zeros;
- multiply by counting the digits after the point, and divide by a whole number or by a decimal.
