How to use this set

Ten questions to solve by substitution. The first few are plain equations; after that come word problems, where you have to build the equations yourself. For those, a small but powerful habit: write down what xx and yy stand for before you write any equation, and give your final answer in the words of the question, with units. Examiners notice.

Section A, Equations

  1. x+y=10x + y = 10, x−y=4x - y = 4.
  2. 3x+y=113x + y = 11, x+2y=7x + 2y = 7.
  3. 2x−3y=12x - 3y = 1, x+4y=6x + 4y = 6.
  4. 4x+3y=244x + 3y = 24, 2x−y=22x - y = 2.
  5. x2+y=5\displaystyle \frac{x}{2} + y = 5, x−y3=3\displaystyle x - \frac{y}{3} = 3.

Section B, Word problems

  1. Two numbers differ by 55, and twice the larger plus the smaller is 3737. Find the numbers.
  2. A father is 2626 years older than his daughter. Six years from now, he will be three times as old as she will be. Find their present ages.
  3. The cost of 22 kg of apples and 11 kg of grapes is ₹ 260260. The cost of 11 kg of apples and 33 kg of grapes is ₹ 330330. Find the cost per kg of each.
  4. A two-digit number has digits summing to 1111. Reversing the digits gives a number that is 2727 less than the original. Find the number.
  5. A fraction becomes 12\displaystyle \frac{1}{2} when 11 is added to its numerator, and becomes 13\displaystyle \frac{1}{3} when 11 is added to its denominator. Find the fraction.

  1. x=10−yx = 10 - y; 10−2y=410 - 2y = 4, y=3y = 3, x=7x = 7.
  2. y=11−3xy = 11 - 3x; x+2(11−3x)=7x + 2(11 - 3x) = 7, −5x=−15-5x = -15, x=3x = 3, y=2y = 2.
  3. x=6−4yx = 6 - 4y; 2(6−4y)−3y=12(6 - 4y) - 3y = 1, 12−11y=112 - 11y = 1, y=1y = 1, x=2x = 2.
  4. y=2x−2y = 2x - 2; 4x+3(2x−2)=244x + 3(2x - 2) = 24, 10x=3010x = 30, x=3x = 3, y=4y = 4.
  5. Clear fractions first: x+2y=10x + 2y = 10 and 3x−y=93x - y = 9. Then y=3x−9y = 3x - 9; x+2(3x−9)=10x + 2(3x - 9) = 10, 7x=287x = 28, x=4x = 4, y=3y = 3.
  6. Larger xx, smaller yy: x−y=5x - y = 5 and 2x+y=372x + y = 37. x=5+yx = 5 + y; 2(5+y)+y=372(5 + y) + y = 37, 3y=273y = 27, y=9y = 9, x=14x = 14. The numbers are 1414 and 99.
  7. Father xx, daughter yy: x−y=26x - y = 26 and x+6=3(y+6)x + 6 = 3(y + 6), i.e. x−3y=12x - 3y = 12. x=26+yx = 26 + y; 26+y−3y=1226 + y - 3y = 12, y=7y = 7, x=33x = 33. Father 3333, daughter 77. Check: in six years, 39=3×1339 = 3 \times 13 ✓.
  8. Apples ₹ xx/kg, grapes ₹ yy/kg: 2x+y=2602x + y = 260 and x+3y=330x + 3y = 330. y=260−2xy = 260 - 2x; x+3(260−2x)=330x + 3(260 - 2x) = 330, −5x=−450-5x = -450, x=90x = 90, y=80y = 80. Apples ₹ 9090 per kg, grapes ₹ 8080 per kg.
  9. Tens digit xx, units digit yy: number is 10x+y10x + y. x+y=11x + y = 11 and (10x+y)−(10y+x)=27(10x + y) - (10y + x) = 27, i.e. 9x−9y=279x - 9y = 27, so x−y=3x - y = 3. Then x=3+yx = 3 + y, 3+2y=113 + 2y = 11, y=4y = 4, x=7x = 7. The number is 7474. Check: 74−47=2774 - 47 = 27 ✓.
  10. Fraction xy\displaystyle \frac{x}{y}: x+1y=12\displaystyle \frac{x + 1}{y} = \frac{1}{2} gives 2x+2=y2x + 2 = y; xy+1=13\displaystyle \frac{x}{y + 1} = \frac{1}{3} gives 3x=y+13x = y + 1. Substitute y=2x+2y = 2x + 2: 3x=2x+33x = 2x + 3, x=3x = 3, y=8y = 8. The fraction is 38\displaystyle \frac{3}{8}. Check: 48=12\displaystyle \frac{4}{8} = \frac{1}{2} ✓, 39=13\displaystyle \frac{3}{9} = \frac{1}{3} ✓.
