  1. B's 1 day's work is 114\displaystyle \frac{1}{14}. In how many days can B finish the whole work?
    1 mark
    Answer and solution

    B does 114\displaystyle \frac{1}{14} of the work in 1 day.

    ∴ B finishes the whole work in 1414 days.

    Answer: 1414 days

  2. A is twice as good a workman as B. A can finish a piece of work in 44 days. How many days will B take to finish it?
    1 mark
    Answer and solution

    Time taken by A =12×\displaystyle = \frac{1}{2} \times (Time taken by B)

    4=12×\displaystyle 4 = \frac{1}{2} \times (Time taken by B)

    ∴ Time taken by B =2×4=8= 2 \times 4 = 8 days

    Answer: 88 days

  3. A piece of work is done by 2020 men. If 88 men do the same work instead, find the ratio of the time taken by the 2020 men to the time taken by the 88 men.
    1 mark
    Answer and solution

    No. of men ∝1Time taken\displaystyle \propto \frac{1}{\text{Time taken}}

    T1T2=M2M1=820=25\displaystyle \frac{T_1}{T_2} = \frac{M_2}{M_1} = \frac{8}{20} = \frac{2}{5}

    ∴ T1:T2=2:5T_1 : T_2 = 2 : 5

    Answer: 2:52 : 5

  4. 3333 men can do a piece of work in 1818 days. How many men are needed to finish it in 5454 days?
    2 marks
    Answer and solution

    No. of men ∝1No. of days\displaystyle \propto \frac{1}{\text{No. of days}}

    33×18=x×5433 \times 18 = x \times 54

    x=33×1854=11\displaystyle x = \frac{33 \times 18}{54} = 11 men

    Answer: 1111 men

  5. A can do a piece of work in 1111 days and B can do it in 5555 days. Find (A + B)'s 1 day's work.
    1 mark
    Answer and solution

    (A + B)'s 1 day's work =111+155=5+155=655\displaystyle = \frac{1}{11} + \frac{1}{55} = \frac{5 + 1}{55} = \frac{6}{55}

    Answer: 655\displaystyle \frac{6}{55}

  6. A and B together can do a piece of work in 2020 days. B alone can finish it in 3636 days. In how many days can A alone finish the work?
    2 marks
    Answer and solution

    (A + B)'s 1 day's work =120\displaystyle = \frac{1}{20}

    B's 1 day's work =136\displaystyle = \frac{1}{36}

    ⇒ A's 1 day's work =120−136=9−5180=4180=145\displaystyle = \frac{1}{20} - \frac{1}{36} = \frac{9 - 5}{180} = \frac{4}{180} = \frac{1}{45}

    ∴ A alone can finish the work in 4545 days.

    Answer: 4545 days

  7. A can do a piece of work in 2424 days and B can finish it in 3636 days. They work together for 1212 days and then B goes away. In how many days will A finish the remaining work?
    3 marks
    Answer and solution

    A's 1 day's work =124\displaystyle = \frac{1}{24}

    B's 1 day's work =136\displaystyle = \frac{1}{36}

    (A + B)'s 1 day's work =124+136=3+272=572\displaystyle = \frac{1}{24} + \frac{1}{36} = \frac{3 + 2}{72} = \frac{5}{72}

    (A + B)'s 12 days' work =12×572=56\displaystyle = 12 \times \frac{5}{72} = \frac{5}{6}

    Remaining work =1−56=16\displaystyle = 1 - \frac{5}{6} = \frac{1}{6}

    This work is done by A in 16×24=4\displaystyle \frac{1}{6} \times 24 = 4 days

    Answer: 44 days

  8. A can do a piece of work in 1818 days and B in 3636 days. They work together for 1010 days. The rest of the work is finished by C in 77 days. If they get ₹1260 for the whole work, how should they divide the money? Also find their daily wages.
    5 marks
    Answer and solution

    A's 1 day's work =118\displaystyle = \frac{1}{18}, B's 1 day's work =136\displaystyle = \frac{1}{36}

    (A + B)'s 1 day's work =118+136=2+136=336=112\displaystyle = \frac{1}{18} + \frac{1}{36} = \frac{2 + 1}{36} = \frac{3}{36} = \frac{1}{12}

    (A + B)'s 10 days' work =56\displaystyle = \frac{5}{6}

    Remaining work =1−56=16\displaystyle = 1 - \frac{5}{6} = \frac{1}{6}, done by C in 77 days

    A's 10 days' work =1018=59\displaystyle = \frac{10}{18} = \frac{5}{9}, B's 10 days' work =1036=518\displaystyle = \frac{10}{36} = \frac{5}{18}, C's 7 days' work =16\displaystyle = \frac{1}{6}

    Consider 59:518:16=10:5:3\displaystyle \frac{5}{9} : \frac{5}{18} : \frac{1}{6} = 10 : 5 : 3

    A's share =10×126018=700\displaystyle = 10 \times \frac{1260}{18} = 700, i.e. ₹700

    B's share =5×126018=350\displaystyle = 5 \times \frac{1260}{18} = 350, i.e. ₹350

    C's share =3×126018=210\displaystyle = 3 \times \frac{1260}{18} = 210, i.e. ₹210

    A's daily wage =70010=70\displaystyle = \frac{700}{10} = 70, i.e. ₹70

    B's daily wage =35010=35\displaystyle = \frac{350}{10} = 35, i.e. ₹35

    C's daily wage =2107=30\displaystyle = \frac{210}{7} = 30, i.e. ₹30

    Answer: Shares: A ₹700, B ₹350, C ₹210; daily wages: A ₹70, B ₹35, C ₹30

  9. A can do a piece of work in 3030 days, B in 2424 days and C in 1010 days. All begin together, but A leaves the work after 11 day and B leaves 44 days before the work is finished. How long did the work last?
    5 marks
    Answer and solution

    A's 1 day's work =130\displaystyle = \frac{1}{30}, B's =124\displaystyle = \frac{1}{24}, C's =110\displaystyle = \frac{1}{10}

    A, B, C together work for 11 day; C alone works for the last 44 days; B and C work together in between.

    (A + B + C)'s 1 day's work =130+124+110=4+5+12120=21120=740\displaystyle = \frac{1}{30} + \frac{1}{24} + \frac{1}{10} = \frac{4 + 5 + 12}{120} = \frac{21}{120} = \frac{7}{40}

    C's 4 days' work =4×110=25\displaystyle = 4 \times \frac{1}{10} = \frac{2}{5}

    Remaining work =1−(740+25)=1740\displaystyle = 1 - \left(\frac{7}{40} + \frac{2}{5}\right) = \frac{17}{40}

    (B + C)'s 1 day's work =124+110=5+12120=17120\displaystyle = \frac{1}{24} + \frac{1}{10} = \frac{5 + 12}{120} = \frac{17}{120}

    Remaining work is done by (B + C) in 1740÷17120=3\displaystyle \frac{17}{40} \div \frac{17}{120} = 3 days

    Total time =1+3+4=8= 1 + 3 + 4 = 8 days

    Answer: 88 days

  10. A and B working alone can finish a piece of work in 88 and 2222 days respectively. If they work at it alternately for a day, A beginning, in how many days will the work be finished?
    3 marks
    Answer and solution

    A's 1 day's work =18\displaystyle = \frac{1}{8}, B's 1 day's work =122\displaystyle = \frac{1}{22}

    Work done in the first 2 days =18+122=11+488=1588\displaystyle = \frac{1}{8} + \frac{1}{22} = \frac{11 + 4}{88} = \frac{15}{88}

    Work done in the first 10 days =5×1588=7588\displaystyle = 5 \times \frac{15}{88} = \frac{75}{88}

    On day 11 it is A's turn: work done in the first 11 days =7588+18=4344\displaystyle = \frac{75}{88} + \frac{1}{8} = \frac{43}{44}

    Remaining work =1−4344=144\displaystyle = 1 - \frac{43}{44} = \frac{1}{44}

    B does it in 144÷122=12\displaystyle \frac{1}{44} \div \frac{1}{22} = \frac{1}{2} day

    ∴ Total no. of days =11+12=1112\displaystyle = 11 + \frac{1}{2} = 11\frac{1}{2} days

    Answer: 1112\displaystyle 11\frac{1}{2} days

  11. A certain number of men complete a piece of work in 7878 days. If there were 1616 men more, the work could be finished in 3232 days less. How many men were there originally?
    2 marks
    Answer and solution

    Let the original number of men be xx

    No. of men ∝1No. of days\displaystyle \propto \frac{1}{\text{No. of days}}

    x×78=(x+16)×46x \times 78 = (x + 16) \times 46

    78x=46x+73678x = 46x + 736

    32x=73632x = 736 ⇒ x=23x = 23

    Answer: 2323 men

  12. If 77 men or 1111 boys can finish a piece of work in 3030 days, in how many days can 77 men and 44 boys finish it?
    2 marks
    Answer and solution

    77 men =11= 11 boys

    77 men =117×7=11\displaystyle = \frac{11}{7} \times 7 = 11 boys

    77 men + 44 boys =11= 11 boys + 44 boys =15= 15 boys

    No. of boys ∝1No. of days\displaystyle \propto \frac{1}{\text{No. of days}}

    11×30=15×x11 \times 30 = 15 \times x ⇒ x=22x = 22 days

    Answer: 2222 days

  13. 44 men and 88 women working 55 hours a day finish a piece of work in 33 days; 33 men and 22 women working 1010 hours a day do the same work in 44 days. Find the number of days in which the work is done by 66 men only, working 55 hours a day.
    5 marks
    Answer and solution

    Let 1 man do mm and 1 woman do ww units of work in 1 hour.

    Case (i): (4m+8w)×5×3=60m+120w(4m + 8w) \times 5 \times 3 = 60m + 120w

    Case (ii): (3m+2w)×10×4=120m+80w(3m + 2w) \times 10 \times 4 = 120m + 80w

    Same work: 60m+120w=120m+80w60m + 120w = 120m + 80w

    ⇒ 40w=60m40w = 60m ⇒ 2w=3m2w = 3m

    So 88 women =12= 12 men, and 4m+8w=164m + 8w = 16 men

    1616 men working 55 hours a day for 33 days do the same work as 66 men working 55 hours a day for xx days

    16×5×3=6×5×x16 \times 5 \times 3 = 6 \times 5 \times x ⇒ x=8x = 8 days

    Answer: 88 days

  14. A can do half as much again as B can do in the same time. A alone can do a piece of work in 66 days. In how many days can both together finish it?
    3 marks
    Answer and solution

    If B does xx, A does x2+x=3x2\displaystyle \frac{x}{2} + x = \frac{3x}{2} in the same time

    Ratio of working of A and B =32:1=3:2\displaystyle = \frac{3}{2} : 1 = 3 : 2

    Ratio of time taken for the same work =2:3= 2 : 3

    Time taken by A =2k=6= 2k = 6 ⇒ k=3k = 3

    Time taken by B =3k=9= 3k = 9 days

    A's 1 day's work =16\displaystyle = \frac{1}{6}, B's 1 day's work =19\displaystyle = \frac{1}{9}

    (A + B)'s 1 day's work =16+19=3+218=518\displaystyle = \frac{1}{6} + \frac{1}{9} = \frac{3 + 2}{18} = \frac{5}{18}

    Time taken by (A + B) to finish the work =335\displaystyle = 3\frac{3}{5} days

    Answer: 335\displaystyle 3\frac{3}{5} days

  15. A man rows in still water at 1515 km/hr and the rate of the current is 22 km/hr. Find the man's rate with the current.

    Speed downstream =(x+y)= (x + y) km/hr

    =15+2=17= 15 + 2 = 17 km/hr

    Answer: 1717 km/hr

  16. A boat goes 2828 km upstream in 55 hours. Find its speed upstream.
    1 mark
    Answer and solution

    Speed =DistanceTime\displaystyle = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}

    =285=5.6\displaystyle = \frac{28}{5} = 5.6 km/hr

    Answer: 5.65.6 km/hr

  17. A man rows upstream 55 km and downstream 77 km, taking 22 hours each time. What is the man's speed in still water?
    2 marks
    Answer and solution

    Speed downstream: x+y=72\displaystyle x + y = \frac{7}{2} km/hr

    Speed upstream: x−y=52\displaystyle x - y = \frac{5}{2} km/hr

    Adding, 2x=72+52=122\displaystyle 2x = \frac{7}{2} + \frac{5}{2} = \frac{12}{2}

    x=124=3\displaystyle x = \frac{12}{4} = 3 km/hr

    Answer: 33 km/hr

  18. A man can row 66 km/hr in still water and he finds that it takes him twice as long to row up as to row down the river. Find the rate of the stream.
    2 marks
    Answer and solution

    Let the rate of the stream be yy km/hr

    Same distance, twice the time, so speed down =2×= 2 \times speed up

    Given 2(6−y)=6+y2(6 - y) = 6 + y

    ⇒ 12−2y=6+y12 - 2y = 6 + y ⇒ 3y=63y = 6

    ⇒ y=2y = 2 km/hr

    Answer: 22 km/hr

  19. A man can row 12.512.5 km/hr in still water. If the river is running at 1.51.5 km/hr, it takes him 2 hours 30 minutes to row to a place and back. How far is the place?
    3 marks
    Answer and solution

    Let the required distance be dd km

    Speed downstream =12.5+1.5=14= 12.5 + 1.5 = 14 km/hr

    Speed upstream =12.5−1.5=11= 12.5 - 1.5 = 11 km/hr

    Total time == 2 hours 30 minutes =2.5= 2.5 hours

    Time =DistanceSpeed\displaystyle = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}}, so d14+d11=2.5\displaystyle \frac{d}{14} + \frac{d}{11} = 2.5

    ⇒ d(114+111)=2.5\displaystyle d\left(\frac{1}{14} + \frac{1}{11}\right) = 2.5

    ⇒ d×25154=2.5\displaystyle d \times \frac{25}{154} = 2.5

    ⇒ d=15.4d = 15.4 km

    Answer: 15.415.4 km

  20. A man can row 1212 km upstream and 1212 km downstream in 33 hours, while he can row 4242 km upstream and 8484 km downstream in 1414 hours. Find the rate of the current and the speed of the man in still water.
    5 marks
    Answer and solution

    Let the speed of the man in still water be xx km/hr and the rate of the current yy km/hr.

    Speed upstream =(x−y)= (x - y) km/hr, speed downstream =(x+y)= (x + y) km/hr. Put p=1x−y\displaystyle p = \frac{1}{x - y}, q=1x+y\displaystyle q = \frac{1}{x + y}

    12x−y+12x+y=3\displaystyle \frac{12}{x - y} + \frac{12}{x + y} = 3 ⇒ 12p+12q=3⋯(1)12p + 12q = 3 \quad \cdots (1)

    42x−y+84x+y=14\displaystyle \frac{42}{x - y} + \frac{84}{x + y} = 14 ⇒ 42p+84q=14⋯(2)42p + 84q = 14 \quad \cdots (2)

    (1) ×7\times 7 ⇒ 84p+84q=2184p + 84q = 21; (2) ×2\times 2 ⇒ 84p+168q=2884p + 168q = 28

    (2) ×2\times 2 −- (1) ×7\times 7 ⇒ 84q=784q = 7 ⇒ q=112\displaystyle q = \frac{1}{12}

    From (1): 12p+1=312p + 1 = 3 ⇒ 12p=212p = 2 ⇒ p=16\displaystyle p = \frac{1}{6}

    So x−y=6x - y = 6 and x+y=12x + y = 12

    Adding, 2x=182x = 18 ⇒ x=9x = 9; then y=12−9=3y = 12 - 9 = 3

    ∴ Rate of the current =3= 3 km/hr, speed in still water =9= 9 km/hr

    Answer: Rate of current 33 km/hr, speed in still water 99 km/hr
