Slicing a cone gives circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas. This course derives their standard equations and reads off their key features.

The course follows the NCERT Class 11 Mathematics chapter Conic Sections and has 2 lessons. Each lesson explains the ideas with worked examples and ends with practice questions and full answers. The numbers in every example and question are our own, so the lessons can be used alongside the textbook exercises.

  1. Circles and Parabolas, Conic sections from a cone, the circle in standard and general form, and the parabola with focus, directrix and latus rectum.
  2. Ellipses, Hyperbolas and Mixed Practice, Standard equations of the ellipse and hyperbola, foci, eccentricity and latus rectum, with a mixed practice set.

By the end you will be able to:

  • Find the equation of a circle and its centre and radius.
  • Find the focus, directrix and latus rectum of a parabola.
  • Find the foci and eccentricity of an ellipse and a hyperbola.
  • Identify a conic from its equation.
