Set language underlies all of later mathematics. This course describes sets, combines them with union, intersection and complement, and counts elements in overlapping sets.
The course follows the NCERT Class 11 Mathematics chapter Sets and has 3 lessons. Each lesson explains the ideas with worked examples and ends with practice questions and full answers. The numbers in every example and question are our own, so the lessons can be used alongside the textbook exercises.
- Sets, Subsets and Intervals — Roster and set-builder form, empty, finite and infinite sets, equal sets, subsets, power sets, intervals and the universal set.
- Operations on Sets and Venn Diagrams — Union, intersection, difference and complement, the laws of set algebra including De Morgan's laws, and counting with n(A union B).
- Sets: Mixed Practice — Twelve original questions on sets, operations and counting, with answers.
By the end you will be able to:
- Write sets in roster and set-builder form.
- Identify subsets, power sets and intervals.
- Perform set operations and prove De Morgan's laws.
- Solve counting problems with n(A ∪ B).
