Before you start

Here are twelve questions on sequences and series. For each one, first ask yourself what kind of progression you are looking at. If the series is a mixture, break its general term into pieces you already know how to add, and handle each piece on its own.

The questions

  1. Find the nnth term and the 1010th term of a1=1a_1 = 1, an+1=an+2na_{n+1} = a_n + 2n.
  2. The 1212th term of an AP is −13-13 and the sum of its first four terms is 2424. What is the sum of its first 1010 terms?
  3. How many three-digit numbers leave remainder 22 when divided by 55? What is their sum?
  4. The sums of nn terms of two APs are in the ratio (5n+4):(9n+6)(5n + 4) : (9n + 6). Find the ratio of their 1818th terms.
  5. The 55th, 88th and 1111th terms of a GP are pp, qq, ss. Show q2=psq^2 = ps.
  6. Find the sum of nn terms of 7+77+777+⋯7 + 77 + 777 + \cdots
  7. The sum of an infinite GP is 1515 and the sum of the squares of its terms is 4545. Find the GP.
  8. Find the sum of the series 1⋅2+2⋅3+3⋅4+⋯1 \cdot 2 + 2 \cdot 3 + 3 \cdot 4 + \cdots to nn terms.
  9. Find the sum of nn terms of 12+32+52+⋯1^2 + 3^2 + 5^2 + \cdots
  10. If a,b,ca, b, c are in AP and b,c,db, c, d in GP, and 1c,1d,1e\displaystyle \tfrac{1}{c}, \tfrac{1}{d}, \tfrac{1}{e} in AP, prove a,c,ea, c, e are in GP.
  11. A farmer in a village buys a tractor for ₹6,00,0006{,}00{,}000 and pays ₹1,20,0001{,}20{,}000 down. He clears the rest in yearly instalments of ₹60,00060{,}000 plus 10%10\% interest on the unpaid amount. What does the tractor cost him in all?
  12. Show that for positive xx, x+1x≥2\displaystyle x + \tfrac{1}{x} \ge 2.
Graph of y = x + 1/x for positive x: the curve falls to its lowest point (1, 2), touching the dashed line y = 2, and rises again, so it never goes below 2.
Question 12: x + 1/x never falls below 2 for positive x
