Integers are a fundamental set of numbers that extend beyond the basic counting numbers we use every day. They allow us to represent values below zero, such as debt, temperatures in freezing climates, or depths below sea level.
The set of integers is denoted by the symbol
(from the German word Zahlen, meaning “numbers”). It includes all whole numbers, their negative counterparts, and zero.
Positive Integers: ![]()
Negative Integers: ![]()
Zero: Neither positive nor negative. It acts as the neutral origin.
The number line is a visual tool used to organize and compare integers. It consists of a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals.
Key Features of the Number Line:
The Origin: Zero is placed in the center.
Direction: * Numbers to the right of zero are positive and increase in value.
Numbers to the left of zero are negative and decrease in value.
Comparison: Any number to the right of another number is always greater. For example,
is greater than
because
is further to the right.
Plotting: Draw a number line and mark the following points:
.
Comparison: Use
or
to make the statement true:
___ ![]()
___ ![]()
