Why bother with one term?

Most exam questions never ask you to write out the whole expansion. They want just one piece of it: the coefficient of x7x^7, say, or the term free of xx, or the middle term. So here we write down the general term once, learn to pick out exactly the term we want, and finish with a mixed practice set covering the whole chapter.

The general term

Every term of (a+b)n(a + b)^n follows one pattern. The (r+1)(r + 1)th term is

Tr+1=nCr an−rbr.T_{r+1} = {}^nC_r\, a^{n-r} b^r.

Finding the middle

Count the terms first. When nn is even you get exactly one middle term, Tn2+1\displaystyle T_{\frac{n}{2} + 1}. When nn is odd there are two of them, Tn+12\displaystyle T_{\frac{n+1}{2}} and Tn+32\displaystyle T_{\frac{n+3}{2}}.

Two rows of term boxes: for n = 8 the nine terms T1 to T9 with T5 highlighted as the single middle term; for n = 7 the eight terms T1 to T8 with T4 and T5 highlighted.
Even n has one middle term; odd n has two

Example 1. Find the middle term of (x−2x)8\displaystyle \left(x - \tfrac{2}{x}\right)^8: T5=8C4 x4(−2x)4=70×16=1120\displaystyle T_5 = {}^8C_4\, x^4 \left(-\tfrac{2}{x}\right)^4 = 70 \times 16 = 1120.

Example 2. Now the middle terms of (2x+y)7(2x + y)^7: T4=7C3(2x)4y3=560x4y3T_4 = {}^7C_3 (2x)^4 y^3 = 560x^4y^3 and T5=7C4(2x)3y4=280x3y4T_5 = {}^7C_4 (2x)^3 y^4 = 280x^3y^4.

Picking out a particular term

Example 3. We want the coefficient of x5x^5 in (x+3)8(x + 3)^8: Tr+1=8Crx8−r3rT_{r+1} = {}^8C_r x^{8-r} 3^r. The powers must match, so 8−r=58 - r = 5, giving r=3r = 3, and the coefficient is 8C3⋅27=1512^8C_3 \cdot 27 = 1512.

Example 4. Look for the term independent of xx in (x2−1x)9\displaystyle \left(x^2 - \tfrac{1}{x}\right)^9: Tr+1=9Crx18−2r(−1)rx−rT_{r+1} = {}^9C_r x^{18-2r}(-1)^r x^{-r}. Set the total power to zero: 18−3r=018 - 3r = 0, so r=6r = 6, and the term is 9C6=84^9C_6 = 84.

Example 5. The coefficient of x6y3x^6y^3 in (x+2y)9(x + 2y)^9 comes straight from the general term: 9C3⋅23=672^9C_3 \cdot 2^3 = 672.

Example 6. If the coefficients of xr−1x^{r-1}, xrx^r, xr+1x^{r+1} in (1+x)n(1 + x)^n are in the ratio 1:3:51 : 3 : 5, compare neighbouring coefficients: nCrnCr−1=n−r+1r=3\displaystyle \tfrac{^nC_r}{^nC_{r-1}} = \tfrac{n - r + 1}{r} = 3 and nCr+1nCr=n−rr+1=53\displaystyle \tfrac{^nC_{r+1}}{^nC_r} = \tfrac{n - r}{r + 1} = \tfrac{5}{3}. Solve the pair and you get n=7n = 7, r=2r = 2.

Example 7. If the 33rd, 44th and 55th terms of (a+b)n(a + b)^n are 8484, 280280 and 560560, divide one term by the one before it: T4T3=n−23⋅ba=103\displaystyle \tfrac{T_4}{T_3} = \tfrac{n - 2}{3}\cdot\tfrac{b}{a} = \tfrac{10}{3} and T5T4=n−34⋅ba=2\displaystyle \tfrac{T_5}{T_4} = \tfrac{n - 3}{4}\cdot\tfrac{b}{a} = 2. Dividing these two gives 4(n−2)3(n−3)=53\displaystyle \tfrac{4(n - 2)}{3(n - 3)} = \tfrac{5}{3}, n=7n = 7, ba=2\displaystyle \tfrac{b}{a} = 2. Finally, T3=21a5b2=84a7=84T_3 = 21a^5b^2 = 84a^7 = 84 gives a=1a = 1, b=2b = 2.
