Comparing Numbers in Standard Form

Example: Compare $2.7 \times 10^{12}$ and $1.5 \times 10^8$ .

Let,

$a = 2.7 \times 10^{12}$

$a = 2.7 \times 10 \times 10 \times 10 \times 10 \times 10^8$

$a = 27000 \times 10^8$

Let,

$b = 1.5 \times 10^8$

Clearly,

$27000 > 1.5$

Therefore,

$27000 \times 10^8 > 1.5 \times 10^8$

So,

$2.7 \times 10^{12} > 1.5 \times 10^8$
