You know that 52=255^2 = 25. Now turn the question round: which number, multiplied by itself, gives 2525? The answer, 55, is called the square root of 2525. Finding a square root is the opposite of squaring. In this lesson you will meet the square root sign, learn the square roots of the perfect squares up to 900900, and use them in some everyday problems.

What a square root is

If a2=ba^2 = b, then aa is called the square root of bb. We write it with the sign b\sqrt{\phantom{b}}, like this:

a2=b⇒b=aa^2 = b \quad \Rightarrow \quad \sqrt{b} = a

We read b\sqrt{b} as "the square root of b". The arrow ⇒\Rightarrow means "so" or "this tells us".

12=1⇒1=122=4⇒4=232=9⇒9=3\begin{aligned} 1^2 = 1 &\quad \Rightarrow \quad \sqrt{1} = 1 \\ 2^2 = 4 &\quad \Rightarrow \quad \sqrt{4} = 2 \\ 3^2 = 9 &\quad \Rightarrow \quad \sqrt{9} = 3 \end{aligned}

A good way to think of it: the square root of a perfect square is the number that was multiplied by itself to make it.

16=4×4=425=5×5=536=6×6=6\begin{aligned} \sqrt{16} &= \sqrt{4 \times 4} = 4 \\ \sqrt{25} &= \sqrt{5 \times 5} = 5 \\ \sqrt{36} &= \sqrt{6 \times 6} = 6 \end{aligned}

Picture a square made of 3636 small tiles. Its side is 66 tiles long. The square root of the area is the length of the side.

Square roots up to 900

This table is the squares table from the last lesson, read backwards.

Number Square root Number Square root Number Square root
11 11 121121 1111 441441 2121
44 22 144144 1212 484484 2222
99 33 169169 1313 529529 2323
1616 44 196196 1414 576576 2424
2525 55 225225 1515 625625 2525
3636 66 256256 1616 676676 2626
4949 77 289289 1717 729729 2727
6464 88 324324 1818 784784 2828
8181 99 361361 1919 841841 2929
100100 1010 400400 2020 900900 3030

So 49=7\sqrt{49} = 7, 144=12\sqrt{144} = 12 and 729=27\sqrt{729} = 27.

Remember. Squaring and taking the square root undo each other. a2=a\sqrt{a^2} = a for any number aa that is 00 or more.

Using the patterns backwards

The patterns from the last lesson also work in reverse.

Multiples of 100. Since 402=160040^2 = 1600, we get 1600=40\sqrt{1600} = 40. Remove the two zeros, take the square root, and put one zero back: 3600=60\sqrt{3600} = 60, 8100=90\sqrt{8100} = 90.

Ending in 25. Since 652=422565^2 = 4225, we get 4225=65\sqrt{4225} = 65. To spot it, cover the 2525 and look at what is left: 42=6×742 = 6 \times 7. So the root is 6565.

Example 1

Find 2025\sqrt{2025}.

Cover the 2525. What is left is 2020, and 20=4×520 = 4 \times 5. So the root is 4545.

Check: 452=202545^2 = 2025. Yes.

Example 2

Find 4900\sqrt{4900}.

Remove two zeros to get 4949. 49=7\sqrt{49} = 7. Put one zero back: 7070.

4900=70\sqrt{4900} = 70

Square roots in everyday problems

Many problems about squares are really asking for a square root.

Example 3

A gardener plants 42254225 trees. There are as many rows as there are trees in each row. How many trees are in each row?

If there are nn trees in each row, there are nn rows. So n×n=4225n \times n = 4225, and n=4225n = \sqrt{4225}.

4225=65\sqrt{4225} = 65

There are 6565 trees in each row.

Example 4

Some friends go to a restaurant. Each one spends as many rupees as there are friends. The total bill is ₹81. How many friends are there?

If there are nn friends, each one spends nn rupees. So the bill is n×n=81n \times n = 81, and n=81=9n = \sqrt{81} = 9.

There are 99 friends, and each spends ₹9.

Example 5

A square garden has an area of 625625 square metres. How long is each side?

The area of a square is side times side. So the side is 625=25\sqrt{625} = 25 m.

Numbers that are not perfect squares

What about 50\sqrt{50}? Look at the squares near 5050.

72=4982=647^2 = 49 \qquad 8^2 = 64

5050 is between 4949 and 6464. So 50\sqrt{50} is between 77 and 88. It is not a whole number. In fact it is a little more than 77, because 5050 is very close to 4949.

You will learn how to find such square roots as decimals in the last lesson of this chapter.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking 16=8\sqrt{16} = 8. The square root is the number times itself, not half: 4×4=164 \times 4 = 16, so 16=4\sqrt{16} = 4.
  • Thinking 3600=600\sqrt{3600} = 600. Remove two zeros and put back only one: 3600=60\sqrt{3600} = 60.
  • Mixing up the square and the square root. 92=819^2 = 81, but 9=3\sqrt{9} = 3.
