If 2x=25, what is x? It must be 5. This simple idea, law 11, lets you solve equations where the unknown sits in the exponent, such as 2x+5=16. The trick is to write both sides as powers of the same base, then compare the exponents.
Law 11: equal powers#
Law 11. If am=an, then m=n, where a=−1,0,1.
If two powers of the same base are equal, their exponents are equal.
Why not the bases -1, 0 and 1?#
For these three bases, different exponents can give the same answer.
- 14=17, because both are 1. But 4=7.
- 02=03, because both are 0. But 2=3.
- (−1)2=(−1)4, because both are 1. But 2=4.
So the law only works for other bases.
Example 1#
2x=25⇒x=57x=729⇒x=29
Solving for the exponent#
- Write both sides as powers of the same base. Use repeated division to turn a number into a power.
- Set the exponents equal (law 11).
- Solve the simple equation you get.
Example 2#
Solve 17x−2=173.
17x−2⇒x−2⇒x=173=3=3+2=5
Example 3#
Solve 2x+14=229.
x+14⇒x=29=29−14=15
Example 4#
If 2x+5=16, find x.
First write 16 as a power of 2. Dividing by 2: 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, four times. So 16=24.
2x+5⇒2x+5⇒x+5⇒x=16=24=4=4−5=−1
Example 5#
If 22x+3=27, find x.
2x+3⇒2x⇒x=7=7−3=4=24=2
Example 6#
If 52x+5=625, find x.
Dividing 625 by 5: 625, 125, 25, 5, 1, four times. So 625=54.
52x+5⇒2x+5⇒2x⇒x=54=4=4−5=−1=−21
The answer can be a fraction.
Example 7#
If 75x−6=343, find x.
343=7×7×7=73.
5x−6⇒5x⇒x=3=3+6=9=59
Example 8#
If 22n=4096, find n.
Dividing 4096 by 2 again and again takes twelve steps, so 4096=212.
22n⇒2n⇒n=212=12=6
Example 9: use another law first#
If (−3)m+1×(−3)5=(−3)7, find m.
Join the left side with Law 1, then compare.
(−3)m+1+5⇒(−3)m+6⇒m+6⇒m=(−3)7=(−3)7=7=1
The base −3 is allowed. Only −1, 0 and 1 are not.
Example 10#
If 5m÷5−3=55, find m.
Move 5−3 to the other side, where it multiplies.
5m⇒5m⇒m=55×5−3=55+(−3)=52=2
Example 11: a fraction on the right#
If 53m+1=1251, find m.
125=53, so 1251=531=5−3 by Law 7.
53m+1⇒3m+1⇒3m⇒m=5−3=−3=−3−1=−4=−34
Remember. Same base on both sides, then the exponents are equal. Turn numbers into powers by repeated division, and fractions into negative powers.
Common mistakes#
- Comparing exponents when the bases are different. First make the bases the same.
- Writing 16 as 28 or 44. Check by dividing: 16=24.
- Sign slips in the last step, as in 4−5=−1.
- Forgetting that 1251 is a negative power: 5−3.

Show answers
- x=4. 27=33, so x−1=3.
- x=1. 343=73, so x+2=3.
- x=2. 81=34, so x+2=4.
- x=2. 1000=103, so x+1=3.
- x=2. 32=25, so 3x−1=5 and 3x=6.
- x=−2. 64=43, so 2x+7=3 and 2x=−4.
- x=2. 216=63, so 2x−1=3 and 2x=4.
- x=4. The left side is 5x−3+3=5x, and 625=54.
- x=−1. 81=2−3, so x−2=−3.
- x=3. 729=9×9×9=93.
