A favourite exam question gives you a surd value for xx, such as x=12−3\displaystyle x = \frac{1}{2 - \sqrt{3}}, and asks for the value of an expression like x3−2x2−7x+5x^{3} - 2x^{2} - 7x + 5. Everything you have learned so far comes together here: rationalising, squaring with identities and collecting like surds. This lesson shows two methods, and some neat short cuts for expressions such as x+1x\displaystyle x + \frac{1}{x}.

Method 1: work out each power

Example 1

If x=12−3\displaystyle x = \frac{1}{2 - \sqrt{3}}, find the value of x3−2x2−7x+5x^{3} - 2x^{2} - 7x + 5.

First rationalise to get xx in a usable form:

x=12−3=2+34−3=2+3\displaystyle x = \frac{1}{2 - \sqrt{3}} = \frac{2 + \sqrt{3}}{4 - 3} = 2 + \sqrt{3}

Next find x2x^{2} and x3x^{3}:

x2=(2+3)2=(2)2+(3)2+2(2)(3)=4+3+43=7+43x3=x2⋅x=(7+43)(2+3)=14+73+83+12=26+153\begin{aligned} x^{2} &= (2 + \sqrt{3})^{2} = (2)^{2} + (\sqrt{3})^{2} + 2(2)(\sqrt{3}) \\ &= 4 + 3 + 4\sqrt{3} = 7 + 4\sqrt{3} \\ x^{3} &= x^{2} \cdot x = (7 + 4\sqrt{3})(2 + \sqrt{3}) \\ &= 14 + 7\sqrt{3} + 8\sqrt{3} + 12 \\ &= 26 + 15\sqrt{3} \end{aligned}

Now substitute:

x3−2x2−7x+5=(26+153)−2(7+43)−7(2+3)+5=26+153−14−83−14−73+5=3\begin{aligned} x^{3} - 2x^{2} - 7x + 5 &= (26 + 15\sqrt{3}) - 2(7 + 4\sqrt{3}) - 7(2 + \sqrt{3}) + 5 \\ &= 26 + 15\sqrt{3} - 14 - 8\sqrt{3} - 14 - 7\sqrt{3} + 5 \\ &= 3 \end{aligned}

The surd terms cancel: 153−83−73=015\sqrt{3} - 8\sqrt{3} - 7\sqrt{3} = 0. The rational terms give 26−14−14+5=326 - 14 - 14 + 5 = 3.

Method 2: find an equation that x satisfies

Method 1 needs a lot of multiplying. There is a cleverer way. Since x=2+3x = 2 + \sqrt{3},

x−2=3(x−2)2=(3)2x2−4x+4=3x2−4x+1=0\begin{aligned} x - 2 &= \sqrt{3} \\ (x - 2)^{2} &= (\sqrt{3})^{2} \\ x^{2} - 4x + 4 &= 3 \\ x^{2} - 4x + 1 &= 0 \end{aligned}

Squaring removed the surd, so xx satisfies the simple equation x2−4x+1=0x^{2} - 4x + 1 = 0.

Now divide x3−2x2−7x+5x^{3} - 2x^{2} - 7x + 5 by x2−4x+1x^{2} - 4x + 1, using long division as in the factorisation course:

  • x3÷x2=xx^{3} \div x^{2} = x; subtract x(x2−4x+1)=x3−4x2+xx(x^{2} - 4x + 1) = x^{3} - 4x^{2} + x; this leaves 2x2−8x+52x^{2} - 8x + 5.
  • 2x2÷x2=22x^{2} \div x^{2} = 2; subtract 2(x2−4x+1)=2x2−8x+22(x^{2} - 4x + 1) = 2x^{2} - 8x + 2; this leaves 33.

So the quotient is x+2x + 2 and the remainder is 33:

x3−2x2−7x+5=(x2−4x+1)(x+2)+3=0×(x+2)+3=3\begin{aligned} x^{3} - 2x^{2} - 7x + 5 &= (x^{2} - 4x + 1)(x + 2) + 3 \\ &= 0 \times (x + 2) + 3 \\ &= 3 \end{aligned}

The same answer, with no surd arithmetic at all after the first step.

Short cuts for x and 1 over x

Many questions ask for x+1x\displaystyle x + \frac{1}{x} or x2+1x2\displaystyle x^{2} + \frac{1}{x^{2}}. Two facts help.

  • If x=a+bx = a + \sqrt{b} and a2−b=1a^{2} - b = 1, then 1x\displaystyle \frac{1}{x} is simply the conjugate a−ba - \sqrt{b}, because (a+b)(a−b)=1(a + \sqrt{b})(a - \sqrt{b}) = 1.
  • From the identity (x+y)2=x2+y2+2xy(x + y)^{2} = x^{2} + y^{2} + 2xy with y=1x\displaystyle y = \frac{1}{x}:

x2+1x2=(x+1x)2−2\displaystyle x^{2} + \frac{1}{x^{2}} = \left(x + \frac{1}{x}\right)^{2} - 2

Example 2

If x=3+22x = 3 + 2\sqrt{2}, find x+1x\displaystyle x + \frac{1}{x} and x2+1x2\displaystyle x^{2} + \frac{1}{x^{2}}.

Since (3+22)(3−22)=9−8=1(3 + 2\sqrt{2})(3 - 2\sqrt{2}) = 9 - 8 = 1,

1x=3−22\displaystyle \frac{1}{x} = 3 - 2\sqrt{2}

So

x+1x=(3+22)+(3−22)=6\displaystyle x + \frac{1}{x} = (3 + 2\sqrt{2}) + (3 - 2\sqrt{2}) = 6

and

x2+1x2=(x+1x)2−2=36−2=34\displaystyle x^{2} + \frac{1}{x^{2}} = \left(x + \frac{1}{x}\right)^{2} - 2 = 36 - 2 = 34

Example 3: a cube root

If x=2+33x = \sqrt[3]{2 + \sqrt{3}}, find x3+1x3\displaystyle x^{3} + \frac{1}{x^{3}}.

Cubing both sides, x3=2+3x^{3} = 2 + \sqrt{3}. Since (2+3)(2−3)=1(2 + \sqrt{3})(2 - \sqrt{3}) = 1, we have 1x3=2−3\displaystyle \frac{1}{x^{3}} = 2 - \sqrt{3}. So

x3+1x3=(2+3)+(2−3)=4\displaystyle x^{3} + \frac{1}{x^{3}} = (2 + \sqrt{3}) + (2 - \sqrt{3}) = 4

The cube root looked frightening, but the question only needed x3x^{3}.

If a=3+23−2\displaystyle a = \frac{\sqrt{3} + \sqrt{2}}{\sqrt{3} - \sqrt{2}} and b=3−23+2\displaystyle b = \frac{\sqrt{3} - \sqrt{2}}{\sqrt{3} + \sqrt{2}}, find a2+ab+b2a^{2} + ab + b^{2}.

Rationalise each:

a=(3+2)23−2=5+26,b=(3−2)23−2=5−26\displaystyle a = \frac{(\sqrt{3} + \sqrt{2})^{2}}{3 - 2} = 5 + 2\sqrt{6}, \qquad b = \frac{(\sqrt{3} - \sqrt{2})^{2}}{3 - 2} = 5 - 2\sqrt{6}

Then a+b=10a + b = 10 and ab=25−24=1ab = 25 - 24 = 1. Using a2+b2=(a+b)2−2aba^{2} + b^{2} = (a + b)^{2} - 2ab:

a2+ab+b2=(a+b)2−2ab+ab=(a+b)2−ab=100−1=99a^{2} + ab + b^{2} = (a + b)^{2} - 2ab + ab = (a + b)^{2} - ab = 100 - 1 = 99

Working with a+ba + b and abab avoids squaring the surds at all.

  1. 1x=2−3\displaystyle \frac{1}{x} = 2 - \sqrt{3}, so x+1x=4\displaystyle x + \frac{1}{x} = 4.
  2. 42−2=144^{2} - 2 = 14
  3. 1x=5−25−4=5−2\displaystyle \frac{1}{x} = \frac{\sqrt{5} - 2}{5 - 4} = \sqrt{5} - 2, so x−1x=(5+2)−(5−2)=4\displaystyle x - \frac{1}{x} = (\sqrt{5} + 2) - (\sqrt{5} - 2) = 4.
  4. 1x=4+15\displaystyle \frac{1}{x} = 4 + \sqrt{15}, since 16−15=116 - 15 = 1. Then x+1x=8\displaystyle x + \frac{1}{x} = 8 and x2+1x2=64−2=62\displaystyle x^{2} + \frac{1}{x^{2}} = 64 - 2 = 62.
  5. x=3+22x = 3 + 2\sqrt{2}, so x−3=22x - 3 = 2\sqrt{2}. Squaring, x2−6x+9=8x^{2} - 6x + 9 = 8, so x2−6x+1=0x^{2} - 6x + 1 = 0.
  6. x−1=2x - 1 = \sqrt{2}, so x2−2x+1=2x^{2} - 2x + 1 = 2 and x2−2x−1=0x^{2} - 2x - 1 = 0. Then x3−2x2−x+3=x(x2−2x−1)+3=3x^{3} - 2x^{2} - x + 3 = x(x^{2} - 2x - 1) + 3 = 3.
  7. a=(5+1)24=3+52\displaystyle a = \frac{(\sqrt{5} + 1)^{2}}{4} = \frac{3 + \sqrt{5}}{2} and b=3−52\displaystyle b = \frac{3 - \sqrt{5}}{2}. So a+b=3a + b = 3 and ab=1ab = 1, giving a2+b2=9−2=7a^{2} + b^{2} = 9 - 2 = 7.
  8. x3=3+22x^{3} = 3 + 2\sqrt{2} and 1x3=3−22\displaystyle \frac{1}{x^{3}} = 3 - 2\sqrt{2}, since 9−8=19 - 8 = 1. The sum is 66.
